Abstract:
We have proposed an algorithm based on the combination of hardware-assisted texture-mapping and general clipping approach to enable interactive visualization of multiple sets of large volume data. The algorithm renders only the externally visible surfaces of all volume datasets under consideration at a given instant, with dynamic clipping/capping enabled to explore the interior of the volume data. The 3D surface texture mapping is thus exploited by implementing the instantaneous tessellation of the outermost surfaces in the form of triangles as they vary in the number, size, shape and orientation during the manipulation of the clip geometry (which is a plane or a cube). The preliminary performance tests show that our multiple-dataset-visualization (MDV) approach results in a substantial improvement in interactivity over the isosurface-extraction and 3D volume texture mapping techniques.
