InfiniBand vs. 10 GbE: Which Will Be the Industry Standard for HPC?

Session: Interconnect Alternatives

Event Type: Exhibitor Forum

Time: 11:00am - 11:30am

Session Chair: John R Sopka

Speaker(s): Patrick Guay

Location: 615-616

Abstract:

InfiniBand is an architecture and specification for data flow between processors and I/O devices that promises greater bandwidth and almost unlimited scalability for clustered systems. Over the last several years, the high performance computing community has embraced InfiniBand as the high performance, low latency interconnect technology for building scalable clusters and supercomputers. However, in recent months 10 Gigabit Ethernet has created a buzz in the industry causing some to speculate which interconnect technology will be adopted as the industry standard for HPC.

This session will provide an overview of InfiniBand and 10 Gigabit Ethernet technologies, including products that are available today as well as in the future. New benchmark results will also be presented. The session will also cover business considerations and technical details (recommended configurations, applications that derive improved performance) for the attendee to learn about the two high performance interconnect technologies.
