Abstract:
Even as we enter an era of computer systems with peak floating point rates in excess of 100 TF/s, several challenging architectural issues raise serious questions about the practicality of Peta-scale scientific and technical computing. These issues include 1) poor efficiency on real applications, 2) growing power and cooling requirements for large scale systems, and 3) the approaching limits of chip design and fabrication for semiconductors. Given these constraints, it becomes even more critical to select architectures that are targeted to their application workload. This panel will discuss several new technologies that can offer dramatic improvements in performance, and power and space efficiency, when compared with conventional microprocessors.
